If a piece of machinery or equipment is not fit for purpose, doesn’t meet expectations or becomes costly to run, it can generally be traded in. But trading in a poor-performing grain silo is near impossible. Careful selection is important due to the sheer capital outlay required for a sealable grain storage option which can range from $150/t of storage capacity to over $400/t. With some silos sold as compliant with the Australian Standard for sealing having not passed our independent testing, there is a chance growers could end up with a product that is not fit for purpose. This report aims to provide information on key silo features to assist buyers to make informed decisions. Dozens of silos (and a shed) from various manufacturers have been tested to the Australian Standard for sealing with commentary on best and worst features in this collaborative project with the GRDC stored grain extension team. Research, words and photos by Ben White, Chris Warrick, Alex Conway, Mark Saunders and Josh Giumelli.
