Carbon is the word on the lips of the grain industry at the moment. Grower representative organisations and research bodies are throwing significant effort and investment at the carbon space. But as growers, what does it all mean and how do our figures stack up relative to other countries or other industries? To gauge our crop production emissions on farm, we need to use a carbon calculator. While the selection of calculators has consolidated in recent years, how do they compare? Data recently released by GrainGrowers at Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) updates in New South Wales and Western Australia would suggest there are significant differences between the calculators with these variances in figures coming from a few key drivers. Research Engineer Ben White is familiar with the evolving carbon landscape having actively used the available calculators for the last four years and takes a look at the landscape in light of this research.
